Where the heck is Spoon??!!

I saw the band about a year ago in Des Moines, IA. It was a very fun weekend. I happened to be in the same hotel as the band and got to talk to Eric and Rob a little. Saw Britt as I was getting off the elevator. Met some friends, bunch of laughs, enjoyed a really nice show.

That's the last I've heard of them. Where the hell did this band go? I'll continue to support them no matter what, but really...hey, Britt, hey Deux Deux, hey Hot Pockets...anybody...is the band still functioning? Are they working on an album? Are they taking the year off? Are they at loggerheads over "creative differences"? Is somebody's girlfriend getting in the way? Somebody in rehab? Is one of the guys coming out as a girl? Is Josh coming back? Is Josh taking over? Is Britt moving to Mexico? Did the band just decide that Transference is their best effort and they've maxed out? That's as good as it gets and might as well go out on top?

Really, I'm ok with any of these answers. But how about a word? A rumor? Anything. I just want to know if I should still say Spoon's my favorite band, or if it's time to say "Remember Spoon? Weren't they the greatest?"

    I'm thinking the boys are on a much needed break from Spoon. I think Rob Pope is touring with his other band this summer, and who knows, maybe Britt is writing his heart out for the next fan-freaking-tastic album. But there is no way in hell we won't hear from this band again. But I get where your coming from jp, a bonus track, or some remixes or, even a simple "Hey, we're still alive" from the band would be cool (;

They always do this. I've been a fan since 2002 and they nearly always take a longish break between albums, with little or nothing being released and no news.

I've seen Jim Eno a couple of times in the past two months. He played with John Vanderslice at his show in Austin on May 24th, and then he played with Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears at their ACL taping on June 20th, so at least we know that he is still alive (and is still a man). I didn't get to talk to him either time though, so I don't know what's up with Spoon.

I remember the long break between Kill the Moonlight and Gimme Fiction, and then the long break between Gimme Fiction and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga (though they did re-release Telephono/Soft Effects during that break-- it still seemed like it was forever between albums, though) and being worried that they were no more. (Oddly, the time between Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga and Transference didn't feel that long to me, even though it was two and a half years. I wonder why that is.)

Interesting....maybe vinyl reissue of Telephono and Soft Effects. Doubtful. Maybe a new album. They just come out one day and say new album out next month. That'd be cool!

It would be awesome if they reissued Telephono and Soft Effects on vinyl. I have the original vinyl copies of both, but I don't play them because I'm afraid I'll ruin them. But if they do decide to I hope it is after I find a new job. I'm currently unemployed and cannot afford music/music collectables at the moment!

What I don't get is the lack of web communication. I guess I haven't checked the site for quite awhile, but, you know, a couple words...a new bonus...a news story saying nothings happening for awhile. I think, long ago, hot pockets had a couple posts here....whatever. It's never been easier to communicate with your supporters. To me, that appears to either be a complete lack of effort or completely intentional.

If Britt doesn't want to deal with customer relations, shouldn't Merge put out a press release or something?

I'm probably wrong, but I don't recall a total communication breakdown (!) for a year or so between albums or tours.

Theyve never been more popular, which is why I would think somebody in the organization would say, "Hey Deux, when's the last time we sent out a Spoon blast?" I'm worriedvthat no news is bad news.

Yea i kinda think they might be headed toward a breakup or something. Last album was kinda disjointed... they dont seem to be having as much fun.... britt seems to have made the kind
of album he's always wanted to at least four times now and they are all pushing 40 I think.... when was the last time they even played a show??

that said they've always been abysmal at PR / marketing and just made up for it with quality and yeah they often go MIA between albums.

According to tour tracker, the last date was Nov. 21 last year.

Frankly, I didn't know about the November European dates. I saw them in July and the American tour ended in August. So I guess that's a little better, but still, no news whatsoever for 9 months? I think either something's up or somebody at Merge isn't doing their job.

talked to rob at at a get up kids show a few months ago. i think he said they were going to start working again after the get up kids reunion is over, but i don't think that'll be for another couple months at least unfortunately. i sincerely doubt they're heading for a breakup though, and while it isn't my favorite, i'd even argue their last album was their most successful to date. just saw this photo posted to autumn de wilde's tumblr page though, which is what made me come back to the site.

Having both Spoon and Okkervil River playing Fun Fun Fun Fest makes me wish I was into festivals! (If anyone wonders, I don't like them because I get very overwhelmed very quickly and then don't have any fun.)

    I'm going to Austin!

TastyPrawn - you should go to the festival anyway! I've been to a hefty share of poorly run festivals, but Fun Fun Fest seems to be a really good one! Or if you don't want to go all three days, I guess you could just go to the day that Spoon's going to be there.

Headed to F3 too & am super stoked to see the dudes back in action (although Big Freedia's Nite set is a close second to Spoon's set as most anticipated festival moment).
