First song was "Don't Make Me A Target" but "The Ghost of You Lingers" was the one that really hooked me into them.

Everything Hits at Once - My friend's boyfriend had bought it on a store clerk's recommendation, and they played it for me in the car on the way to lunch. I believe the car was an old navy blue Volvo with tan interior, although I sometimes wonder if I didn't imagine that detail as Girls Can Tell is just the kind of album you would hear for the first time in the backseat of your friend's boyfriend's old navy blue Volvo.

Sister Jack. I was reading an online interview with some other band who happened to mention Spoon and how fantastic they are. Curious, I went to iTunes and looked them up. I randomly picked SJ as a starting point and so my most current band obsession began.

    "Lines in the Suit."

I was listening to the radio (101.5 FM in Austin-- I think it was on Andy Langer's show) and they played it in February (or maybe early March) of 2001. I didn't catch the name of the artist or song, but I knew I liked it.

A couple of weeks later, I bought this one music magazine on a whim and it included a CD with the song. I was happy that I finally knew who the band was. So, I went out and bought their whole back catalogue (Telephono, Soft Effects, A Series of Sneaks, and Love Ways) before I bought Girls Can Tell... Which doesn't make sense, since the song I heard was from Girls Can Tell. I think I wanted to listen to the stuff in the order it came out.

Just randomly: The first time I tried to get my newborn nephew to sleep, I sung "The Beast and Dragon, Adored" and that seemed to calm him down. Also, when Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga came out, he was the first to listen to it with me. He's probably one of the most musically intellectual toddlers in New Mexico.

Not Turning Off was the first tune I heard by Spoon. It was on a local radio station back in '96. I liked it but did not catch the name of the band. A few months later a little lady recorded Telephono for me, bless her little heart, and there was that song and an album full of others that were equally as enjoyable. Caught them live in PDX a lot since then, hung out briefly and chatted with the boys on a couple occasions, and continue to be impressed with the sonic bliss that they create with each album (however, I must admit...I would love to hear an ep's worth of material that was slightly more stripped down sounding...I miss it).

Well, I'm also one of those that discovered Spoon while watching the excellent movie "Stranger than fiction", although it was just recently. But I wonder, perhaps someone can help me out here... At the end of the film when they play "The Book I Write", there is this terrific and long guitar solo, or rather, an instrumental part at the end, several minutes. But in the soundtrack album the song is only 3andahalf minute or something. Is the instrumental part/guitar solo ending not included? Is this complete song, including the part I go on and on and on about... on any album?

I'll probably eventually buy them all but I thought perhaps someone could help me get that one first...

The Fitted Shirt on Triple J radio years back... most likely driving around in my car. I acquired 'Girls Can Tell' shortly after but only gave it a few listens and somehow forgot I had it. Then it was a while later I heard The Way We Get By and fell in love with the band <3

I remember Waiting for the Kid to Come Out years ago, but got re-interested with Stranger Than Fiction.

I first heard "Everything Hits at Once" in 1999 and immediately fell in love with the band... It is still probably my favorite song of theirs.

My old roommate used to play Telephono all the time - hated it. Wasn't until I heard "Quincy Punk Episode" when A Series of Sneaks was released that I fell hook-line-and sinker. Now a days, I can't imagine not liking Telephono

“Not Turning Off” from telephono. my friend at work was in a band at the time and hooked our studio up with the stylings of spoon. love how they have evolved, but would like to hear spoon get a bit loud with an edge again...

"don't buy the realistic" from telephono on the "what's up matador" comp. made me buy telephono immediately and every ep and lp since then on the respective release date. no purchase regrets thus far.

The first I ever heard was "I Turn My Camera On" too. It was about couple years ago on one of those indie type music blogs (2004 I think). Definitely made me want to hear more. I'd say my current favorite song is probably "Rhythm and Soul" though. Groovy beat.

The Beast and Dragon, Adored. I bought Gimme Fiction not knowing what it was, just read about it. Now I'm a huge fan and own all the albums.

"Don't Make Me a Target" - I saw Gax4 in plenty of end-of-year lists so decided to buy the album, and it's obviously the first track.

Don't Buy The Realistic, on the What's Up Matador? compilation way back in 1997. Do I win? :)
