Curious about the new album title, I Wiki-ed the term to learn a little more:

"Transference is a phenomenon in psychoanalysis characterized by unconscious redirection of feelings for one person to another. One definition of transference is "the inappropriate repetition in the present of a relationship that was important in a person's childhood."[1] Another definition is "the redirection of feelings and desires and especially of those unconsciously retained from childhood toward a new object."[2] Still another definition is "a reproduction of emotions relating to repressed experiences, esp[ecially] of childhood, and the substitution of another person ... for the original object of the repressed impulses."[3] Transference was first described by Sigmund Freud, who acknowledged its importance for psychoanalysis for better understanding of the patient's feelings.

According to The Source published in June 2001, "During transference, people turn into a 'biological time machine.'" A nerve is struck when someone says or does something that reminds you of your past. This creates an "emotional time warp" that transfers your emotional past and your psychological needs into the present."

    The rest: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transference

While reading this, the lyrics to, in particular, "Got Nuffin" sprung to mind - the lines about not having anything to lose but bitterness, hang ups and patterns. Seems like Britt might be going through a period of serious self-reflection/analysis/improvement. If so, best of luck to him - it's not an easy thing to do but it's worth it!

It could be about the psycho-analytical concept of transference/counter-transference indeed, but I tend to think such a simple title is probably meant to work on a number of levels. More simply transference is just 'the act or process of transferring' or 'the fact of being transferred'. You can then think about who or what is being transferred in many different contexts and ways. Mainly I'm just excited about a new Spoon album though. Six albums in they haven't disappointed me yet.

That could be the case, too. I'm probably reading way too much into it because I need SOMETHING to do until the end of January :) What should I over analyze next?

You're in the U.K., which means you get to enjoy the new record a whole 24 hours before we do, right? Lucky.

haha i heard! Pitchfork really likes Spoon, as they should.

I'm pretty sure it'll get bumped again. They finished the album a while back didn't they?

Yikes, that is pretty close. However, one important thing is that the melody is not sampled but rather the beat. Hard to stake claim to a beat.
