The first band Britt Daniel ever played with was in high school in Temple, Texas. The band were called "The Zygotes".

BD adamantly insists that he was NOT responsible for coming up with that name.

    - MNW

BTW: It is doubtful that any recordings of the Zygotes exist (or were even made, for that matter); BD's first known recordings are on the 3 cassettes he released with his early 1990s pop combo Skellington.

EDIT: Coincidentally enough, I just found myself flipping through the October 4, 2007 issue of Rolling Stone, in which a small tidbit of relevant fact is revealed:

The [SPOON] frontman covered the punk classic "She" by The Misfits with his high school band. "I heard it in a record store the other day, and I was like, 'Oh, yeah!'" he says.

    The Zygotes.

That does sound like a band name a high school kid would come up with :)

It's the last word in the dictionary... that's probably where they got it, unless one of the players actually knew his (scientific) stuff.

I'm sure that Britt is at least grateful that they didn't put an awful pun in and make it worse, like:

The ZyGoats or something like that!

I am a former member of both the Zygotes and Skellington. The Zygotes were primarily a cover band. I have one live recording cassette with about 20 80's covers. We also did one "studio" recording cassette which included 6 original songs. The studio we used was the fromer recording studio of Little Joe and LaFamalia in Temple, Texas. It was very poor quality--they didn't let us use the good equipment! Adi Hernandez, the son of Little Joe Hernandez, went to high school with us--that's how we got access. The original songs on that cassette are: Flame, Deceiver, Selfish, Wahalote, Salsburg and Cloudhead.

Discography for Skellington (also cassettes): The Town's Gone Dry and "Skellington" The third cassette that people attribute to the band "Skellington Rex" was not really recorded by us. The music was written by us with the exception of the song "Weah." The cassette was actually recorded in August of 92 by Britt, Joel Freid and Cliff Gaines. I believe it was done on a 4 track mixer britt used to keep at his house--which was our practice studio.

oh and by the way...I didn't pick the name The Zygotes either! I actually joined that band after it lost their first drummer--who also happened to be a high school teacher of Britts! I think the bassist came up with it. He now plays in a band in Dallas with Chris Savage--formerly of the Buck Pets. I cannot recall their name off hand.

Oh I forgot, Skellington had a song included in a compilation tape in 1992 also. The tape was called Freak Show: A compilation of bands from Austin.

Very cool! I'm sure we'd all love to hear those tracks if you're ever willing/able to share them!

I just checked his facebook. Mic the Tiger is the old Zygote's bassist's new band..Chris Chapman is his name.

someone else commented on a misfits cover song the Zygotes did. I know we did a song called Bullet by the Misfits..its on the tape i got. World Shut Your Mouth by Julian Cope is covered on there too...Britt was a fan of Cope's even in high school. We also did a cover of the Metallica remake of Breadfan...wish I had that recorded, it kicked ass.

Hmmm. If my Skellington sense is working, then the above "bullet"-in must have come from a "cannon"...

BTW: Who or what is Captain Metaphor?

skellington-ex, thank you for dropping by! I'd love to hear your cover of Bullet, but I cannot imagine Britt singing that song.

Not really trivia, more so an inquiry.. And I know to some people it doesn't matter (and I guess it shouldn't really), but I'm just curious about Britt's love life. Is he seeing anybody? Has he ever really been serious? I mean some of the lyrics from Girls Can Tell kinda suggest a long lost love.. but I don't know.

Let me just clarify what I meant..
I feel like out of all my favorite artists, I know the least about who Britt Daniel really is.
I know most times artists like to separate their personal life from their music, and that is completely understandable.
But when I feel a connection to a particular work of art, I like to know more about it's creator.. What they were thinking when they made this, what they were going through when they made that.

Didn't someone mention a Spoon documentary in the works? For comparison, a film like The Fearless Freaks (Flaming Lips doc) is a great inside look to the members of the band. Really gives you a sense of where they come from and why they do what they do. Would love something like this for Spoon.

I know exactly what u mean Q. The more you know about someone, the more you can relate to their art. Which of Britt's lyrics are from personal experience, which are just made up stories? etc.

As a song writer I personally like people to wonder. What's real and what is not?

I have I wrote that everyone asks if it happened to me, and it is just made up, but I like that fact you know?

Maybe Britt feels the same way. Could you imagine him with facebook or twitter showing pictures of where he ate, who he is hanging out with, his girlfriend etc? It's just not his personality I don't think.

Some of the lyrics on Girls Can Tell were made after Britt's grandfather died.

He always came off as the type of dude who might. We need to get some of these important questions to the next journalist slated for an interview.

D: The “Tweakers (Remix)” is the first Spoon song to feature rapping. Who’s rapping and what are they rapping about?

From the Onion - did this ever get done live?

    heres a longer excerpt

    http://www.phawker.com/2014/08/06/excerpt-an-oral-history-of-spoon/

you guys are really missing the point. Personally the reason I love spoon so much is you know that Brit doesn't do anything except play in his band. That seems to be the long and short of it. He's a guy that wants to write good songs and play in his band. The less I know about him the better. But really, that seems to be all there is to know. The oral history seems to confirm it.

Does sound like Toni Braxton, actually. As for the rest of it, certainly there are middle school classmates with some good BD kickball stories or something...

That Pitchfork article is the kind of stuff I really love to read; a little peek into Britt's brain and a first-person analysis of what went into each song, emotionally and technically. It's always interesting that Transference seems to get the shaft. Here, he only offers one sentence about the production of it. I feel like it's the bastard child of their good albums (Telephono is the real bastard child, but no one even acknowledges it anymore).

Chris Chapman here - yeah I played in the Zygotes. No, I did NOT pick the name. A very early incarnation of the band had two other members - Hemu Nair on guitar and Mike Horner on drums. I remember vividly how the name came about. We were rehearsing for a high school battle of the bands and needed a name. Horner took out a dictionary, flipped through the pages and randomly put his finger on a word - which happened to be zygote. We all went ok yeah sure and went on with it.

Britt, however announced to the crowd that our name was "The Stone Groovers, not the Zygotes". But for whatever reason it didn't stick. I actually have video of this somewhere. But don't pin the name on me. ;-)

And yes, I have probably the only remaining copy of the Zygotes cassette we did. Soon after it was done, my car was broken into and it, along with other stuff was stolen. Thankfully, I had made a copy before that happened. I once had it posted online about 8 years ago but Britt contacted me, asking to pull it down. This was because Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga was getting ready to be released - he didn't want the distraction, which I totally understood and obliged. I think he was also a bit reluctant to have his early writing out there. But i CAN tell you a line from the most recent record, i forget which song at the moment, the phrase "the trains collide" - he used that phrase in a song called Cloud Head.

But no - I will not post the recordings again, in respect of Britt's wishes.

    ---begin blah blah blah --
As for me - I quit music for quite a while to have a career. But in 2007 I hooked up with Chris Savage (ex Buck Pets) to remaster many Buck Pets demos and unreleased recordings, which appear on the CD 'Demos and Rare'. Soon after, I joined a band called Mic The Tiger with Savage, playing guitar. In 2010 the band broke up - I'm currently in a band called Oddlot on bass, playing in mainly Dallas/Ft. Worth, though we've played Austin a few times, SxSW and such.
    --end blah blah blah ---
