Great new song! As always, I'm curious what Britt is singing about so I typed out the lyrics this morning (would love some analysis or at least another set of eyes for content):

    I've been losing sleep
    Just noddin' sleep
That I wish that I knowed

    I've lost all my tapes
    Black mask and piece
    Just for asking piece
That I ought to be owed

    That's the rent I pay
Just like my brother would say it

Out amongst the stars and the stones
Every kind of fortune gets sold
Every kind of line is gonna come back to me just as i call

    That's the rent I pay
    Like my brother say it
    That's the rent I pay

    Rent I pay
    Like brother say it
    That's the rent I pay

    Ooo la
    Ooo la
    Ooo la
    Ooo la
    Ooo la
    Ooo la
    Ooo la
    Ooo la

    I've been losing sleep
    And I'm noddin' sleep
That I wish that I knowed

    I've lost all my tapes
    Black mask and piece
    Just for asking piece
That I ought to be owed

    That's the rent I pay
    Like my brother say it
    That's the rent I pay

    Oh, rent I pay
    Like her brother say it
    That's the rent I pay

Everybody knows just where you been goin'
Everybody knows the things that you been showin'
    And if that's your answer
    No, I ain't your dancer
    And if that's your answer
    No, I ain't your dancer

The song is sick but I am not so into the lyrics, at least the ones in the chorus.

Now featured on the band site, with very cool Britt-tastic video. Sounds great.

At the end I'm pretty sure its:

Everybody knows just where you've been goin
everybody knows the faces you've been showing

Actually, listening to it more I think he sings:

    I've lost all my tapes
    BACK MASKING piece
    Just for asking piece
That I ought to be owed

This is reinforced by the mention of "back masking" in the recent Spoon e-mail blast:

"[The record's] got songs about holy rollers, back masking, real life properties of physics, love during the apocalypse and a brief reappearance of Jonathon Fisk."

AND if you listen closely, right after the word "asking" in the first verse you hear what sounds like a back masked word. Haven't reversed the song to figure out what he's saying but I'm sure I'll get around to it.

Also, good call on the lyric fix, iamthekey. Thanks!

@iamthekey I know what you mean about the chorus lyrics. Buy maybe it really was a saying his brother said?

Kind of like, you get what you deserve? The rent I pay. Get what you pay for?

Like how Ringo's different sayings "Hard Day's Night" & "Eight Days A Week" turned into Beatles classics.

    Y'know?

The lyrics are in the first 15 seconds of the "unofficial" music video! Take a look. It's "backmasking" and instead of "piece just for asking" it's actually "peace just for asking."

I think the song is about mixed feelings re: being a popular musician. He wants peace and sleep, but people won't leave him alone because he got what he wanted and is doing music for a living. "Everybody knows the places you been going, everybody knows the faces you been showing." The ending seems like it's taking the perspective of someone on the outside, saying "it must be great to be you! everyone's paying attention." But Britt's saying that's not the reason he pursued music in the first place: "And if that's your answer, no I ain't your dancer." The rent he pays for pursuing music is that he can't have peace and quiet.

Cool. Yeah I'm coming around with the lyrics but the "like my brother say" line just seems sort of lazy to me in a way Spoon lyrics never do. He seems to be leaning on a "cool" factor and his delivery lately like in Divine Fits which I never felt like was a part of his music before but whatever.

It Sounds great. The drums are great. The double entendre of "were rolling" meaning we're recording but confidentially and slyly really meaning "we're killing it" at the beginning brings a smile to my face every time. The weird miner guitar cords that come in on the right speaker are great. For such a simple song the guitar overdubs are sort of confusing to figure out. When the baseline comes back in suddenly descending after the break its really weird and a great moment. Britt's voice sounds better than ever, of course.
