Any one heard this yet? The Spoon track is excellent. I read a review here in the UK (Uncut magazine) which said basically that most of the songs were lame except the Spoon track and a couple of others. It's quite something for Spoon to get mentioned as they really aren't big over here. I think Spoon do a good job on cover versions, though the production on this is a little conventional.

I don't think it is released in the US until the New Year. It is available via file p to p file sharing, if you are ok with all that illegal dodgy-ness!

EDIT: Amazon has March 22 as the US release date. It came out here on Monday.

March 22? That's, like, YEARS away. Put me down for some of that illegal dodgy-ness.

Glad to hear Spoon's contribution earned praise over there. It doesn't surprise me that the result sounds conventional - having Ray Davies right there, I imagine you'd feel a little weird tweaking his song, even if, left alone to their own devices, the result would have wound up being as beautiful and anthemic as, say, Tweakers: The Remix.

I am eager for some dodgy-ness.
I was originally surprised to hear that Spoon was one of the few standouts. Then I remembered the story behind "Decora," where they were one of many bands intended to contribute to a Yo La Tengo tribute but the only band to actually record their contribution.

I just noticed on the website promoting the album (http://www.seemyfriends.co.uk/) there's a video section where they show a track by track thing that has Ray Davies talking about working on the track with Spoon.

If anyone wants to hear the track, let me know. My email's on the page shown on my signature, and I can email you the track. I'm impatient and found the album through the usual devious ways.

Yes I got the song right when it came out too. 100% legal. Haha. It's a very cool song. I am Kinks fan too, and not just because I love Spoon, but I though their track was one of the best. I felt Metallica's "You Really Got Me" was pretty terrible actually. I just kind of skimmed through the songs, but Spoon's definitely stood out. They did great work.

It's so interesting to me to hear Spoon produced by people who aren't going for a Spoon sound. On their records their instruments usually have an elemental sound where you can hear the parts and tell everything that's going on. Here they sound almost watery and blended together.
