I used to always skip over "Sister Jack". For some reason, it just didn't click with me. I could possibly say that I hated it. Then, at the end of 2006 - or was it 2007? - I was sent to Austin by Spin to take pics of the band in the studio for an article they were doing. I was there for an hour or two, and they were practicing Sister Jack. It was just me and the band. It was like my own little mini-concert!

Since that day, I have adored "Sister Jack" and now must find a new song to dislike, I guess. By the way, I don't think Britt was happy with the pictures. He likes for Spoon photos to be very vague and mysterious, and Spin specifically wanted a very straight-forward, in-studio portrait. But, what could I do? Spoon wasn't paying the bills, and Britt was nice enough to comply with my specific needs. He was a real nice guy.

I don't like the album version of "Sister Jack", but the piano demo is one of my absolute favorites of theirs. It's amazing that the two are so different.

Wait a minute - is Trouble Come Running your least fav song on the new album? Weird - cause I love it and have listened to it at least 35 times in a row. Of course, that's kind of strange, but I like to completely digest a song.

This is a tough topic because I think one of Spoon's great strenghts is they have very few "bad" songs.

That said, I think "Well-Alright" from the "Dark Was the Night" compilation might be a contender. (Even tho I listened to it a million times b/c at the time there was no new Spoon music and it's still catchy enough.) The title of the song is kind of funny (maybe even an inside joke?) because Britt usually tosses in a "well-alright" or an "alright!" in just about every song (even a ballad like "Goodnight Laura"!) But there's just something that doesn't click about the song. It seems like Britt chose a higher pitch for his vocals (?) and it's kind of repetitive. Given the high quality tracks from The National and so many other bands on that CD, I have to admit I was a little disappointed in that one.

"Tweakers" is just a throw-away experimental/noise track as is much of the "Get Nice" "bonus" CD which was also disappointing. But hey - nothing wrong with that. It's not like they released "Get Nice" as an album!

Can we talk about Spoon's most underrated or least appreciated songs? Personally, I absolutely love "The Book I Write," which few people ever mention. I also thought "Stroke Their Brains" was amazing and worthy of being on an album, not just a b-side. In fact, I've listened to it more than "Got Nuffin" for some reason. I would love to hear them play either one live, but I feel like they never will.

At first I didn't like "Is Love Forever?" but it's grown on me.

Out Go the Lights AND Trouble Comes Running are some of my favorites. Tansference really doesn't have any weak songs. None are even close to my least favorite SPoon song.

P.S. I love "The Book I Write". And I LOVE Stranger than Fiction. Great film for Will Ferell.

  10. I think that Waiting for the Kid to Come Out is awesome- need to start with that! - BUT Britt's British thing sometimes jars me a little bit. It definitely sounds ... early?

You're so right about "Stroke Their Brains"! That song is incredible. I've been listening to it lots lately at very high volumes.

    I'll say "Tweakers". It's kind of a cop-out, but I guarantee I won't listen to it again.

I don't know why... but I never seem to get "30 Gallon Tank" that's my least favorite song of spoon...
I think its because listening "Reservations" puts you in some mood then "30 Gallon Tank" changes the mood entirely and gets repetitive.

But all the other songs mentioned here are songs that I like a lot.
I remember when I first listened to Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga I didn't like "The ghost of you lingers" but then after listening the record a couple of times
It became one of my favorites and sometimes it was the only song that I wanted to hear from that record. So maybe I need to listen a couple of more times...

Interesting point. Though I think that's the point of a Series of Sneaks. To take you in and out of the mood. Calm, brash, emotions, all at once, or split up. It's a series of quick tunes, in and out, and I like it. I really like 30 Gallon Tank. The drum beats are so so cool, and the song is carried the whole way

I love 30 Gallon Tank. The guitar and drumming demonstrates to me just how great they were as musicians so early in their career. 30 Gallon Tank and Metal Detektor, my two favorite songs on the album, I think were very Radiohead-esque.

In a way, i would only say that the entire Telephono album never sounded like such a fantastic record to me. I like it but not like "big time".
I absolutely love The Book I Write

I agree: "Tweakers." It gets on my nerves, and I usually love instrumental/experimental stuff (I love GET NICE!-- I've listened to it more times than GA GA GA GA GA), but "Tweakers" does nothing for me.

As I've stated before, I feel like "Tweakers" is just Britt dicking around because he knows he has an audience. Or maybe he actually likes it, who knows.
