From time to time, they play what sounds like they either are ripping off "I Turn My Camera On" or else it's an instrumental version that's slightly different...I wonder if it's Spoon and if it's not, how the hell are they getting away with such a blatant rip off?

I know exactly what you're talking about! I watch the show every week with my friend who's also a Spoon fanatic, and when we heard that music, we just looked at each other and my friend said, "Wow, I bet Spoon's getting some nice royalty checks." I wonder if it really is them and if they are getting paid for it.

I sure hope so. If not, that's bullshit cuz that's their song.

The wife and i discuss it every week, too. I don't think Spoon did it, though they might be getting royalties the same way a band gets royalties when their song is covered.
The only other thing I see that might stop spoon from getting paid, is that basic beat and bass line was a pretty generic disco beat to begin with (not saying the song is generic, because I LOVE that track), so it might be hard for them to claim ownership.
This reminds me of when the travel channel used weezer's island in the sun song in a promo. A few months later, they replaced it with a cover version. The cover was still a very faithful copy of the original, so I'm sure they still had to pay SOME royalties, just not as much as when using weezer's recording.
The Top Chef song is changed up enough that I think they may be able to use it without paying spoon anything...

I am so glad someone posted this because I've always been curious if there was a link but have never found any evidence either way. Sort of like the riff sometimes heard during Friends that sounds like Rattled by the Rush.
