Disgruntled with Spoon

I am disgruntled with Spoon right now. Ok Ok, first off I'm not mad. I'm just a little upset. There has not been a bonus track since December last year. I will not be able to see Spoon on tour, unless I can make it to Lolla this year. (Which is great, but they won't play as long as they would a t a concert. I want to see Spoon!) And their website hasn't been updated in ages!!! Their discog is still the same, Transference isn't on it yet, or Written in Reverse Single. There was a new addition just yesterday in the news section, but it was more about tour dates where I can't see them. Am I complaining? Sure you could say that. But as a musician, and a huge fan I'm just a little sad. I miss Spoon.

I know the band is horribly busy with touring, and that's a lot of work. They are a great live band and it shows. But all I have left to do is bid on extremely expensive Spoon vinyl (Soft Effects 12" EP Just went for over $60 yesterday).

In short, I'm a little sad. But I must press on. Haha. Thanks for listening to me complain!

I'm actually happy to see your post Tyler. Spoon are playing a bunch of dates this summer/fall but I agree the majority are less than desirable venues/festivals. I don't think they are the best band to see outside where the acoustics suck. And it could just be my perspective but from what I've heard BD has become Mr VIP lately. Regardless, I still love the music and Jim is the most awesome drummer on the planet :)

I'm right there with you on feeling really frustrated with not being able to see them live yet but I don't think Spoon has an ego problem. I think they're really enjoying a successful tour with opening bands they admire. Every mention I've read of Britt showing up at other bands' shows has been as an audience member - a music lover - not as some asshole rockstar stereotype hanging around backstage. As for updating the website (besides the News section, occasionally) and booking shows, it's not the band's job. Their popularity is up, so they're playing bigger shows and making tv appearances - but, still, every so often Spoon (or Britt, solo) pull a surprise move and play a free show in the parking lot of a record store, for instance. They aren't in complete control over where they wind up.

    Still...GET OVER HERE ALREADY! :) -

ALSO: that mid-July Portugal date? Spoon AND Prince? Prince AND Spoon? Don't think I didn't spend my lunch hour wrapping my brain around my work schedule and bank account trying to make THAT trip a reality.

Pointless Bad Ass Prince Post: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQ4i9RwrP4c&playnext_from=TL&videos=zXKrH8sMnKc <-- that's what Prince & The Revolution sounded like rehearsing in a basement.

Yes, I have also heard that BD goes to shows and I believe he is really into music but he's also often in the VIP section and yes, going backstage. Never said anything was wrong with that, just not my cup of tea. No reason to get upset over my little opinion ;)

I dunno about him often being in VIP areas- my friend who saw him watching The Yummy Fur back in January said he was just in the crowd watching the show even taking a few pictures with his camera phone. Sounds pretty normal to me. :)

I think it's nice to see Spoon going to all these festivals because it's a way to get fans who don't usually listen to Spoon to get into them. I do wish we could know if there's going to be some regular headlining tour dates this fall and winter. It's kinda weird they've just got one LA show (which I'm ecstatic about going to) and no other headlining shows till Europe.

And I think it's a damn shame to see Spoon have a website that's so lacking in updates. It's nice to get the occasional newsletter from Deux Deux, even if the news is already a week or two old. But I don't think it'd be that hard for someone in their camp to get stuff updated on their site. But I'm probably expecting too much because I run my own (officially approved) unofficial blog for another band.

I've only seen Spoon once, at Summerfest, an outside festival. I thought they sounded fantastic. But I was in the front row so I suppose if you were towards the back it could have been bad. Anyway my biggest complaint is the lack of current Spoon content we have. They put out a single, an album, play late night, then go tour forever. Which is fine. That's what bands do.

But the website definitely needs work. Oh how I would love a bonus track. Maybe some "Transference" demos, a live track, ANYTHING! I'm dying here!!!!!!!!

I hope someone who is something to somebody affiliated with Spoon is reading this. Thank you.

    Love,
    Tyler

I have the advantage of being a UK fan - they aren't big over here. The always play small to medium sized venues in London and it's always easy to get tickets. I have tickets for November. Britt told me they have to play for the privilege of playing in Europe as they never make enough to cover the costs. That said they took 3 years to come back after I first saw then in 2002.

I hear what you say though Tyler, sounds tough for you. As for the gaps between release -that is how Spoon always work it. Take a look at the dates on the discography. If you take out compilations there are big gaps.

Since they've settled at Merge, Spoon has released a new album about every two years. That's not a bad wait, I think.

I don't care so much about anything other than missing them live. I would love to go to the show at the Paladium, and LA is not TOO far from PHX, but my current work/school/pet project doesn't really allow me the time to go :(
I really want to see them here in the PHX, although I do understand, cuz the last time they were here, they had to cancel cuz there wasn't enough tix sold...but they were part of a "festival" and I was surprised they didn't just reschedule at a smaller venue. :(
All that being said...Spoon is my favorite band and I have yet to see them enough...I know I've said before, but I've seen other bands WAYYY more, and it hurts that it's not MY FAVORITE BAND INSTEAD!! dammit.
well. what are ya gonna do? we just love them too much for their own good, maybe.

    @ pherron

I think it's a shame that the band very rarely play in Europe, and especially in the UK. I'm sure that if the radio stations took a minute to stop kissing Lady GaGa and Florence and the Machine's collective ass and play some Spoon, they would be a lot more successful over here.

It boggles my mind that UK radio stations don't support them; I mean, Spoon make excellent radio friendly rock and pop.

EDIT: I know Mark Radcliffe from R2 is a fan and has played them on his show with Stuart Maconie. So there is that.

Yeah, I have never understood why Spoon aren't big here. Much poorer bands have had much bigger press. Since I first saw them in 2002 the crowds and venues have got steadily bigger - shows are selling out now. Back then it was a really small venue called The Spitz near Spitalfields Market, only a few hundred people. They have played in the UK nearly every year since 2005 and recently gone to Manchester and Glasgow, rather than just London. Really they should be selling out at the Brixton Academy. Still in a selfish way it's good for me as smaller venues are much better.

I think Deux Deux heard our complaining. Transference has been added to the discography. But I want moooorrrrrreee. At least include the 3 singles/eps in between Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga and Transference.

Well we got the MP3 demos back! It seems if you have a moan on the Spoon message board someone actually notices - that makes a nice change. Don't You Evah is still missing on the discography though.

Yeah I was really surprised that anyone noticed!!! That's very cool though. Yes the discography has a few mistakes. There is no Don't You Evah, and the singles don't have proper release dates. "written In Reverse" was not released the same day as "Got Nuffin". But just a few minor issues. At least they are up!!!!
