Based on my discovery that people wanna know how to play Spoon songs, I'd love to help out. (I know the chords to about 75% of their songs but not necessarily the riffs or tabs)
Any songs you're interested in? Let me know.

I would love to see Metal Detektor tabbed, or at least the chord progression, if possible. Thanks for offering to do this!
Posted 12 years ago # -
The chords to Metal Detektor are
A F#m E B (for "metal detektor ringing part," for instrumental middle, and for ooh-ooh ending*)
E B E E (for "it's a lie no more" part)That little riff they have is just the notes E F# F# E (Although it sounds good to do E F# F# D# over the B chord). It sounds like they have the note B below as well (so you might play 0-2-2-0 on the high E string and also play the open B string below it each time). There are a couple ways to do this while also doing the chords, but no "right way" since it sounds like the guitar in the song never plays the riff at the same time as the chords.
Other note: playing along with the recording is annoying because the entire song is sharp from standard tuning, so you have to tune your whole guitar a little bit up or sound terrible playing along.
*the ooh-ooh ending is a good place to occasionally use Amaj7 instead of just A; it makes it sound prettier just like how that part in the recording is prettier

That's great, Gabz. Thanks!

Probably a little obvious, but I'm interested in the chords for "I Summon You."
-CheersPosted 12 years ago # -
How specific do you want it? I'm listening and realizing that he does a bunch of stuff with the chords, but people wanting to play the song for themselves might not necessarily care about the difference between F and Cmaj7/F.
Big rule here: I haven't written in the timing for changing chords (though " means repeat). This a song where it's pretty clear when he's changing what chord he's playing, so it's probably best to use the song as a the guideline for when to change chords.
INTRO: C Em Am C/G* (play the open strings a little bit between each chord for that "moving" sound, but only at this beginning part. Also, play it with a triplet feel.)
VERSE (remember the weight)
F Am Em Dm Am EmPlay intro
(yeah you got the weight)
F Am Em Dm Am Em C EmCHORUS (oh oh where are you tonight)

Cmaj7 C Em Am C/G F G Cmaj7VERSE
F Am Em Dm Am Em C EmCHORUS
Am C/G Cmaj7/F "Dm " Am " Cmaj7/F G
POST-CHORUS BREAKDOWN-ISH PART
Cmaj7 C Em Am C/G F G Cmaj7CODA (good-bye good-bye part)
C C Am C/G F G Cmaj7
C C Am C/G F G Cmaj7
C C/E Am C/G F G Cmaj7*The slash means it is one chord but with a different bass note. C/G = a C chord where a G is in the bass. This would be played as (starting with low E) 332010, just a C chord adding the third fret on low E. Feel free to just play this as a G chord if you want to (in this song anyway).
The Cmaj7/F is (again starting from low E) 133000. Just a power chord but you play the open strings too.Posted 12 years ago # -
Do you know the chords to Chicago at Night, Change my Life, or I Didn't Come Here to Die?
Much thanks.
Posted 12 years ago # -
I Didn't Come Here To Die is basically just variations on two parts.
VERSE: repetition of Em A G (it's important that they are all power chords, listen to song for timing; sometimes it repeats just the A and G before turning around, like at the beginning)
CHORUS: A | Am | Am | Em | G D | Em | (again listen to song for timing)
Chicago At Night is a little more complicated. Note how it's divided into bars, so when you play the | C E | it takes the same amount of time as the one | Am | chord.
INTRO: Am | E | Am7 | D6 |
VERSE: C E | Am | E+ | C E | Am | E+ | C E | A | Am | C | Am | E | G | D | Am | E | G | D |
CHORUS: F | Dm | F | Fm |
Repeat verse and chorus
BRIDGE: Am over and over
ENDING JAM: C E | Am | E+ | (repeat these three bars while pensively moaning "never been to the wall" every two bars)
END OF ENDING JAM: C E | Am | E | Am7 | D6 | C |I'll have to go listen to "Change My Life" some more before I get back to you on that. Hope you have fun with this!

thanks a lot man, these are great.

Its so cool of you to do this for everyone Gabe, thank you. I'd love to know You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb, if its not too much trouble.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Gabe thanks for the tabs. This is making me want to get tabbing again. I Love I didn;t come here to die. It's a classic southern sounding riff. But I never took time to figure out the chorus. Thanks.
I remember playing along with "Change My Life". It was mostly bar chords. I think C# (barred on 4th fret?) and then G#m7 and A barred (577655) something like that.....
You might figure it out first Gabe, but for some reason that's what I though.
Cheers

captain_arz, it is no problem. I enjoy putting this up, particularly because there is a definite dearth of good chord charts out there for Spoon. I like the thought that I might help somebody enjoy playing the song.
You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb is a great one to play! Simple chords but lots of fun. I used to play it all the time when I worked as a restaurant pianist, and it blended right in with the likes of Billy Joel and Elton John. (Metal Detektor converted surprisingly well too)
INTRO: Am D | G Em | Am D |
VERSE: G | C | G | C Cmaj7 | Am G | D D7 | Am G | D D |
repeat verse
BRIDGE: G | C | G | C Cmaj7 | Am G | D D7 | Am G | D D7 | Am G | D D7 | Am G | D D |
repeat verse again, but with extra bit at the end like in the bridge (basically just read the chords to the bridge)
ENDING: Am D | G Em | Am D | Em | Am D | Cmaj7 | abruptly get lo-fi then be silly|

Tyler, if that's the key the song is in, then you're only missing one chord. I think the song basically cycles through C#m A E G# over and over again. The G# is usually played as a power chord (so neither major nor minor), but it's important that it's major in the chorus. I'll have to go listen to the song though; apparently this is one I just don't listen to that much cuz I don't remember it well at all.

Thanks again Gabe! I'm really looking forward to learning this one, it may very well be my favorite spoon LP song.

I actually got a request on my Music Page (which made me very happy) for the chords to "Out Go The Lights." So, here goes:
(divided by when it "feels" right... first words of matching lines are given for reference. "standing there" is the instance after he says "looking like who thinks they know who")

Anyone have an idea of how to play the la Blogotheque version of ghost?
those videos are great

I'm trying to learn the keyboard part from Anything You Want but I can't find any information online. Can someone help?
Posted 12 years ago # -
The intro on keyboard (mind you I don't play piano great) I just play by ear. The Keyboard intro is E F# Ab. Then the piano plays chords A, E, B, E. Like I said I just figured out by ear on a midi keyboard. Hope it helps a bit. Love that song. I usually play it on acoustic guitar and it sounds great.

Got another request on my music page, this time for Who Makes Your Money (one of my favorites, and super simple to boot). Here goes:
VERSE is mostly an A chord, with the riff being just the notes A, A, G#. The turnaround (after "as he hands your wage to you") is Bm, D with differing timing.
So the verse is basically:
A (hang on for a while) Bm, D, A, Bm D, AThe guitar breakdown is E, D, E, D, then returns to the A in the verse.

Thanks for adding Who Makes your Money, one of my all time spoon favorites.

Also, anyone have accurate chords to I summon you?

Gabriel posted the chords to "I Summon You" earlier. Sounds pretty accurate to me! I've copied and pasted it below:

Posted 10 years ago # -
gabe would you be wonderful enough to compile the chords to all the songs that you know? i absolutely love playing along to spoon on my own but i'm not the best at picking out chords.
Posted 10 years ago # -
Hey, does anyone here knows the tabs of any Telephono song? I alredy got Cvantez and Nefarious.
Posted 8 years ago # -
@Proler I can definitely work up some tab for you. I used to play "Don't Buy the Realistic" and "Dismember" a bit. I'm sure I can remember it if I re-listen to them a bit. Any song specifically?
Posted 8 years ago # -
Does anyone have piano chords for Merchants of Soul? I know it's pretty simple but I haven't been able to figure it out.
Posted 8 years ago # -
ersatz, I can tell you the piano accompaniment if that's what you mean? It's not strictly full chords; off the top of my head, it is this (also, I won't include the rhythm, as it changes here and there slightly, and I'm sure you'll pick up on that anyways. And these are notes, not chords btw. Play them at the same time if they're next to each other):
E A
E G
D G
D G
x3
D G
D F
C F
C EFor the last two 'rows' use your hand to play another C at a lower octave at the same time.
And that's pretty much it. Sorry for not being very technical, ha! I'm... Err... Not so great at music theoryPosted 8 years ago # -
Awesome, thanks!
