I am debating whether to stream. I've already heard 3 songs. Which is a solid preview. I kinda want to be surprised. ANTICIPATION!

I'd honestly say give it a spin. It's a very complex record. As with most Spoon records, but especially this one I feel like it rewards (and perhaps needs) multiple listens. Each time I'm hearing new textures and the songs are starting to take shape in my mind. It wasn't immediately obvious at first. It's a dense record with a lot of different genres being represented and a ton of sonic textures.

At times, it's almost too distorted for me though. A bit harsh to listen to, but it's a great record. They Want My Soul (song) is probably my favorite song. It feels like that new feeling of falling in love with someone at the end of the summer.

Knock Knock Knock sounds like someone's mind falling apart. Totally insane!

Have to single out Knock Knock Knock as well. Love the beats, the whistles, the buzzsaw guitar solo, Britt's line about "living in 1892" and the transition into Outlier is so fucking good.

Spoon do this thing that I personally think is really cool. They make short records. Their records are 10 / 11 songs and like 35 minutes long. This one is 37 minutes long. It's good in the sense that you can digest it without having to spend a ton of time sitting around trying to digest it. It plays, it hits you and then you just want to play it all over again right away. I really respect this approach to making a Long Player in 2014.

Of course the only downside is that when they only put out a record every 4 years and it's a short record you just want MORE right away! I hope that they release some cuts that didn't make the album from this one. I want 5 more Spoon records before they call it quits!!!

Actually, on that note I REALLY hope that they signed some kind of multi-album deal with Loma Vista!!!!!!!

ccpkeet, I could not have described the album better than what you wrote there. It really is such an incredible listening experience. Tyler, I would recommend you listen to it. I, too, was going to put off, but then I decided otherwise and it has somehow made me even more excited for when I recieve my physical copy. But whatever. It's up to you I guess.

OK OK I listened. Man it is good. Definitely feel the motown vibe on They Want my Soul and Let Me Be Mine. It's really good. I only listened once. Outlier really stood out. I'm assuming it will start side 2 on vinyl, which is a great opened for the last 5 tracks.

I did not catch the reference to Jonathan Fisk though. Did anyone catch that?

The JFisk ref is in They Want My Soul. He says "Jonathan Fisk still wants my soul".

I agree! I just got more hungry to physically hold the vinyl and check out the artwork after listening!
I'm liking it more with each spin!

@ccpkeet Good lookin' out. I re-listened with headphones and caught it. Really like that song. I think it says educated folk singers want my soul. Jonathan Fisk wants my soul.

I got it on the Pirate Bay, works nice. I will buy the album if they sell it in Brazil, so calm down.

I listened via the stream and then went out and bought the album today, local indie record store. It's fantastic.

    My early thoughts:

It's always hard for me to rank spoon's albums, but I feel like this has the potential to be in their top 3 or even greater. At some point this week, each of the first seven songs have been my favorite on the album. Most spoon albums have a song or two that aren't that great to me, (goodnight Laura, was it you, etc) yet this album doesn't seem to have a single dud. I like the production for the most part. Some of the tracks retain classic spoon sound (title track guitar sound, rent I pay) while some add fresh spice (outlier and inside out especially). New York kiss sounds like a divine fits song, but I'm not complaining too much, I love divine fits.

9/10 for now, but in time, this could morph into the record I would point to as spoon's masterpiece.
