    The album is out today!

I got my vinyl copy on Friday, and have been listening for five days straight.

    Here are my first thoughts:

Let me start off saying this, this is not a Spoon album. However, if you are a Spoon fan you will like this album.

I love the variety of songs, and instruments. This album has a lot of synths, there usually is not many on a Spoon album. The album has a great flow and I like the sequencing a lot, I think it is perfect. Sometimes I disagree with sequencing on Spoon albums :) .

Britt's voice sounds as good as ever. I like Dan's voice a lot too, I like the trade off on vocals. I really really love Britt's voice on "Shivers" it is a cover, the song was written by Roland Howard, who was in various projects with Nick Cave. Britt's voice literally gave me shivers the first time I heard it. The song took me by surprise.

It's followed by a song called "Like Ice Cream". It's a very cool rock song. Perfect for the end of summer. This song to me is the most "Spoon sounding" song.

I don't really have time to write a track by track review right now. Maybe later?

I hope you guys get it and enjoy it.

Let me know what you think.

I got the album on Thursday. Listened a little then, but had no real opinions. It started to sink in today.

    1. When I first heard "My Love is Real", I didn't really like it. Too much 80s synth. However, I have to say, after several listens, that thing is an ear-worm. I'm still not sure that I really like it, but it does get stuck in my head.

    2. I made a point to listen to "Shivers" based on Tyler's post. That song is terrific. I imagine that that would be the big set closer for live shows. Hopefully they'll play somewhere near me, so I can test that theory.

    3. The album rocks a lot more than I thought it did on the first listen.

Still don't know many song names, but it's really growing on me.

Yeah. Album is definitely good. I agree with Tyler Darling in that it isn't at all a Spoon album. I think its the lyrics? Or there is less of a sense of tension or literary feeling.

Anyway, its a solid alt rock album. I like Boeckner's voice on here way better than on anything else ive ever heard him on. It sounds less
'yelpy' and maybe its better due to some Britt coaching in the studio?

I actually like Boeckners songs a lot better than Britts. I think they have a strong influence from Britt, tho. But the structure of his songs seem more thought out. (Although, wow, Brits voice is just as great as always on this album. Which is sort of crazy to me.)

the only gripe I have about this album is 'Like Ice Cream'. I can't stand anything about this song.. the weird vocal sounds... it sounds like douchebag rock. The forced metaphor. Its just.. cheese city... not great....

But. Other than that one song, really solid and catch album! I didnt want to like this side project but I'm glad it exists. I think it sounds a lot more fun than the last few Spoon albums. Like they are having fun. And that is ultimately the point of music!

    peace.

That's so weird because I LOVE Like Ice Cream. To me it sound's the most like Spoon than any other song. The Rock 'n' Roll Riff, and the weird vocals is Spoon thing if you ask me.

I am right on board with iamthekey. I can't stand Like Ice Cream. The lyrics are cheesy and the melody bores me. BUT...Baby Get Worse is a pure gift. When Britt takes over the vocals, I get chills. Total genius.

Do you think Britt doesn't know that? Did he sit down and write the song saying "wow these are lyrics are so deep". No it's tongue and cheek. That's the point of it. "Big Balls" by AC/DC you know?

    Anyone?

It's cool if you don't like it. Everyone has an opinion. I'm not trying to argue. It's just how I feel. I like the song, and it fits perfectly after "Shivers".

Anyway yes I love Baby Get Worse....so great.

I can't get into "For your heart" I don't know what it is. I mean I listen to it, on vinyl.

But if I am listening to it on my phone/computer/ipod I usually skip....

Just throwing around opinions, and it's great that we all have different ones. I guess with "Like Ice Cream", I've just been spoiled by really great songwriting (by Britt) and selfishly expect more. But there's a handful of songs I feel that way about with all of my favorite bands. It's more of a personal quirk than a criticism of his abilities or intentions with the song.

They're playing here in NY on Sunday and I'm kind of kicking myself for not getting tickets.

"Like Ice Cream" is my favorite song off the album, it gets me jazzed every time. For me it's a great song because its a little off the wall lyrically. All the weird sounds and lyrics coupled with that simple guitar and Britt's awesome rock voice, I just love it. And I agree with Tyler, I think they hit it on the nose with it following shivers too! A great album overall, I can't stop listening to it.

I really hope they stop in Portland so I can see them live again, they tore it up in Seattle.
