Yikes, that is pretty close. However, one important thing is that the melody is not sampled but rather the beat. Hard to stake claim to a beat.

I was browsing the magazine section of Borders and came upon Spoon on the cover of The Big Takeover! The interview was solid with enough flavor to keep the obligatory and oft-repeated trajectory of the band interesting. I recommend you pick it up.

After reading this just now, I hopped on YouTube to see if I could find a live video of The Godfathers in Austin. I found this fantastic 1988 U.S. performance (I didn't spot "Austin" anywhere) - pay attention at 1:58

Re: this article

Hey Britt! Wanna join my band, Orphans of Odin?
We could use some bass, keys, or maybe you could play the trumpet I was given but can't play?
we're in olympia, right up the 5 from Portland, you could pop in when you get back from your mega tour of the globe.

Love, Kirk

I bet Britt doesn't mind talking about Elektra, seems like he emerges the victor any way you look at it. I remember skipping school to go get that album the day it came out, at a Tower records ('member those?). It was on a listening station with a great review, and I thought it kicked ass, although I didn't like it as much as Telephono at the time. I was so sure that Spoon was going to be the first 'indie' band I was into who were going to break big and get popular, was surprised when they didn't.

From a fan standpoint I'm kinda glad they didn't blow up then, and that they seemed to get comfortable just making great records and struggling at a lower level of fame, cause the string of perfect albums they went on (continue on) seems likely better than what they may have made/been forced to make had they sold more of 'Series...'. They coulda turned out like Kings of Leon and bloated up real fast, churning out proto-U2 (sorry anyone who digs them, I was just so disappointed with the last album).

But I agree that Spoon's the best band of the decade, since EVERYTHING they released was pretty great, and nothing they ever released has been 'bad'. IMO the worst Spoon release was the free bonus disc with Ga*5, which was a freebie attached to an awesome album. It's hard to match Spoon's balance of prolific and consistent.

Journalists are always obsessed with the Elektra/Lafitte story. I bet Britt's super tired of talking about it ten years after the fact.
