Humiliation is at stake (think Jackass-type of consequences for the loser). The rules? --15 tracks, no more, no less --all songs must be studio LP or EP recordings except for two 'wild card' entries (B-sides, live songs, etc.) --all songs must be Spoon songs (i.e. no Britt solo songs) --mixtape is titled using a lyric pulled from one of the songs that appears on the mixtape We're hoping to get five people who love Spoon as much as we do who wouldn't mind giving our compilations a good honest listen. All you would have to do is provide your opinion on which one is better. For your trouble you'll get your choice of a Spoon concert poster from the website and you'll walk away with the knowledge that you've done something fun and meaningful in a world that can't all be wedding cake. Ideally the judges will have been Spoon fans for a long time and will be familiar with their entire catalog. My friend and I are from Austin so we've grown up with Spoon from the days when Britt was playing solo gigs for five people at Gaby & Mo's. The Intro is played high G (10th fret of A String).... Written in reverse is very easy. It's Capo 3rd fret then Just Em. It various with hammering pinky on 3rd fret of B: Capo 3rd: --0---0------ --0--h3------ --0---0------- --2---2------- --2---2------- --0---0------- Then other chords for it. A lot of Transference is one chord....really. I will tab it good later, this was just off the top of my head. LingeringPet on "Compilation challenge" http://msgboard.spoontheband.com/topic/compilation-challenge#post-2585 Sat, 06 Mar 2010 13:49:47 +0000 LingeringPet 2585@http://msgboard.spoontheband.com/ this was a fun thing for me to think about, although a bit hard to do just in my head without listening to any tracks (since i'm spoon-fasting this month) ... but here is my mega-mix of gritty rawkus-ness and mellow/melodic/minimal tracks, plus a b-side and a live track for good measure. i started with Beast and Dragon because i love the way that song starts off "Gimme fiction" -- i love the bridge part where there's that one slightly different guitar chord he hits before singing "when you don't feel it, it shows, they tear out your soul" ... and i love the sparse nature of "Out go the lights" and of course the piano of "Everything Hits" ... spoon's piano sounds was what hooked me from the beginning. Best line in "Eddie's Ragga" -- "it's hopeless i'm a slut for the new york times" -- always make me grin cuz i think it's about me.

i would have ended the whole thing with "black like me", but i felt like that was too much of a copy of the track order of "GAGAGAGAGA", so i ended on a rocking "Rhythm and Soul" note -- great lyrics and an equal measure of grit and catchiness. it was a hard choice to leave off "Paper Tiger", but i really can't get enough of "who makes your money" -- i love spoon's sparse/minimal/dark songs just as much as their loud, crunchy rockers. plus i figure if this 79 minute mega-dose of spoon hits the right chord with a new listener, they'll go and get the whole album of "Kill the Moonlight" and they'll fall in love with Paper Tiger just as i have.

Analog gets that sorta farty sound like that as they slow to a stop. My first listen through the album (on headphones) this jumped out at me as sort of jarring, especially since I had heard a live version of it that I loved so much. Weeks later and I don't even notice it. Has anyone noticed Britt's humming on some songs as sounding vaguely Kermit-esque? Especially on "Goodnight Laura".
