In regards to the flourishing, color me impressed. I like how you made little textual tie-ins with the song; it made your song choice seem much more deliberate (Most videos like this feel like they included a song just so they would be less boring slash more interesting). It also made the song seem like a more appropriate choice. Kudos!

Hey everybody,

This is my first post here. I'm a Spoon fan and I just wanted to share something with you. I recently made a video featuring flourishing (if you don't know what that is, give my video a watch!) and Spoon's song "I Turn My Camera On". I hope you enjoy, and let me know what you think!

spoonmixtape on "The Greatest Spoon Mixtape of All Time"

Feel like participating in the greatest mixtape contest of all time? Then go to www.spoonmixtape.com. My friend and I got into a drunken conversation over who could create the better Spoon mixtape and now we need to recruit five anonymous Spoon fans as judges so that we can determine a winner impartially. Humiliation is at stake (think Jackass-type of consequences for the loser). The rules?

--15 tracks, no more, no less
--all songs must be studio LP or EP recordings except for two 'wild card' entries (B-sides, live songs, etc.)
--all songs must be Spoon songs (i.e. no Britt solo songs)
--mixtape is titled using a lyric pulled from one of the songs that appears on the mixtape

We're hoping to get five people who love Spoon as much as we do who wouldn't mind giving our compilations a good honest listen. All you would have to do is provide your opinion on which one is better. For your trouble you'll get your choice of a Spoon concert poster from the website and you'll walk away with the knowledge that you've done something fun and meaningful in a world that can't all be wedding cake.

Ideally the judges will have been Spoon fans for a long time and will be familiar with their entire catalog. My friend and I are from Austin so we've grown up with Spoon from the days when Britt was playing solo gigs for five people at Gaby & Mo's. Then again, anyone who has read this far probably automatically qualifies as enough of a Spoon fan to contribute.

Take care, and hope to hear from y'all out in Internet-land. You can email us at:

mixmaster@spoonmixtape.com

P.S. If you're wondering why we don't just have our friends act as judges it's because our friends are too aware of our song preferences which would make it too easy for them to suss out who created each mixtape.

haha it would've been better if they had diversified the setlist a bit more. It was hotter than hell those days, but still fun. They should do a series of gigs in austin, that allows them to play every song in their arsenal.

this was a fun thing for me to think about, although a bit hard to do just in my head without listening to any tracks (since i'm spoon-fasting this month) ... but here is my mega-mix of gritty rawkus-ness and mellow/melodic/minimal tracks, plus a b-side and a live track for good measure.

i started with Beast and Dragon because i love the way that song starts off "Gimme fiction" -- i love the bridge part where there's that one slightly different guitar chord he hits before singing "when you don't feel it, it shows, they tear out your soul" ... and i love the sparse nature of "Out go the lights" and of course the piano of "Everything Hits" ... spoon's piano sounds was what hooked me from the beginning.

Best line in "Eddie's Ragga" -- "it's hopeless i'm a slut for the new york times" -- always make me grin cuz i think it's about me.

i would have ended the whole thing with "black like me", but i felt like that was too much of a copy of the track order of "GAGAGAGAGA", so i ended on a rocking "Rhythm and Soul" note -- great lyrics and an equal measure of grit and catchiness.

it was a hard choice to leave off "Paper Tiger", but i really can't get enough of "who makes your money" -- i love spoon's sparse/minimal/dark songs just as much as their loud, crunchy rockers. plus i figure if this 79 minute mega-dose of spoon hits the right chord with a new listener, they'll go and get the whole album of "Kill the Moonlight" and they'll fall in love with Paper Tiger just as i have.

Just click the link at the bottom to access the in-depth review of Transference, I would love to know what everybody thinks as well!

"Upon first listen most Spoon fans will be caught off guard by the subdued sound of the songs and the almost mid-life-crises feeling behind the lyrics. While people new to the band will probably either find it eclectic or just assume that this band is random by nature. With further & repeated listening, though, this album starts to reveal itself as an interesting peak into the world of a man, and a band, in a substantial period of transition, reflection, and questioning......"

I can't stop listening to this album from beginning to end!!!! aahhhhhh!!!

The article was really in-depth and would answer a lot of technical questions people have about what tools they use to produce the sounds. It's really elaborate and detailed, I was amazed.

It sounds like some sort of tape manipulation to me, specifically, a tape being stopped. Analog gets that sorta farty sound like that as they slow to a stop.

My first listen through the album (on headphones) this jumped out at me as sort of jarring, especially since I had heard a live version of it that I loved so much. Weeks later and I don't even notice it.

Has anyone noticed Britt's humming on some songs as sounding vaguely Kermit-esque? Especially on "Goodnight Laura". Not meant as a diss, Kermitt's one'a my favorite singers.
